Groove OS 2.0 beta.

Your FM-1 samples now: record it, chop it, play it in your beat.

A beta you can try next to 1.4: made to be played, still being finished. It is included for every Groove OS owner.

What's new

  1. 01 · New

    Sample anything, on the FM-1

Play a sound from your phone or computer into the FM-1 over USB-C, or sample the FM-1 itself, and press REC. It lands on the next empty pad, ready to play.

Press REC a moment late and the take still starts on its first hit. Set BARS and it records exactly those bars, in time with your song.

  2. 02 · New

Chop it, shape it, play it

Chop a take on its hits across 16 pads on two pages, trim it, tune it, reverse it or loop it. Or play one sound up the keys as an instrument.

WARP fits a loop to your tempo. Resample the FM-1's own groove, a whole beat or a single track, and chop it back out in a new order.

What you make stays with you

SAMPLES lists every kit, instrument and take, with the room left. Turn to hear each one, delete what you don't need, and DELETE UNUSED gives room back.

After an install your projects come back on the FM-1 with the samples they use, each in its own slot, with a copy in your downloads.

Also in the beta

New

  • HOME + SAVE on the SAMPLER keeps what the input has just heard, without pressing REC.
  • HIGH keeps the best sound. LONG gives about twice the recording time. Every take keeps its own.
  • 16 pads on two pages: the white keys play pads 1 to 16, and HOME + OCT flips the page.
  • INST plays one sound across the keys, with LOOP, ATTACK and RELEASE.
  • WARP fits a loop to the tempo as PITCH, BEATS or TONES, and SET TEMPO fits the tempo to the loop.
  • A kit becomes a drum track and an instrument a sample track. EDIT opens it again in the SAMPLER.
  • HOME + REC on the SAMPLER takes back your last take or change, and the take stays in SAMPLES.
  • A project holds up to 32 samples, and says how many are missing on an FM-1 that lacks them.
  • SAMPLE IT, a course on the FM-1: record a sound, chop it and play it, each step checked as you go.

Improved

  • Synths and reverb sound bigger and wider on headphones and the line out. Over USB-C the mix stays centered.
  • HOME is the new name for SHIFT. Held, it shows each knob's second job, and a toast says what every combination did.
  • A tap of GLO opens SETTINGS everywhere. Hold it for a short card about the page you are on.
  • While HOME is down, a strip lists every track, so HOME + ALGORITHM never leaves you guessing.
  • SAVE while the music plays waits for the stop and saves then, so the music never stops for it.
  • ARP opens and closes its page and the arpeggio plays on. A new project's first save lets you name it.
  • Bluetooth is a plain on or off row, and a phone lists the FM-1 as FM-1 Groove.
  • The six courses come in 2.0's own words, with HOME and the new GLO.
  • If Groove OS can't start, the FM-1 shows GROOVE OS RESCUE and waits for the Install page.
  • A recording the FM-1 can't read when it starts is kept, never erased.

Fixed

  • A loop you WARP with a silent end keeps your tempo, and a captured loop plays in time from the bar line.
  • A recording is kept when the FM-1 runs out of room while the website is sending it sounds.
  • REC works right away after the website has put sounds on your FM-1.

Your projects

Your samples and kits come with you, and your saved projects come back on the FM-1 after every install, each in its own slot, with a copy in your downloads. Banks and settings are not promised to carry over.

If you know 1.4

Everything 1.4 does comes along, and a song you made on 1.4 opens as it was. Here is what works differently.

At the controls

  • HOME is the new name for SHIFT. Hold it and K1 to K4 show their second job. The screens and the manual say HOME.
  • GLO: a tap is SETTINGS, a hold is the page's card. In a Learn course the hold shows the step's card, so the two gestures no longer swap.
  • SAMPLER sits between KEYS and PROJECT on the SELECT wheel. It opens on SAMPLES, your list of everything you have made. SEL opens the editor.
  • SEL and a turn move a number by tens. A recorded lane is cleared in the TRACK menu, under AUTOMATION, and HOME + REC brings it back.
  • OCT- and OCT+ move the bar on SEQ and on a kit's grid. Hold HOME with them to set the track's octave, or to flip a kit's pads.

Drums and your sounds

  • A kit has 16 pads, on two pages. PADS A is pads 1 to 8 and PADS B is 9 to 16. The built-in kits fill the first page, the second is yours.
  • Your own sounds are recorded on the FM-1. Kits and instruments you make sit in PRESETS as KIT USER and INST USER, newest first.
  • A project holds up to 32 samples. A project that uses a recording this FM-1 doesn't have says how many are missing.

Saving and playing

  • SAVE while the music plays waits for the stop. It says SAVES WHEN YOU STOP and saves the moment you stop, so the music never cuts out.
  • ARP opens and closes its page and the arpeggio plays on. Switch it off with the ARP row at the top of its menu.
  • A pattern and an arpeggio can't share a track. The button you press wins, and a toast says which one is on.

Settings, courses and rescue

  • Bluetooth is a row that is on or off. There is no pairing step. A phone lists the FM-1 as FM-1 Groove, and Bluetooth MIDI works as it did.
  • The six courses have their own cards. They say HOME and the new GLO, and the install puts them on the FM-1.
  • There are no M-VAVE screens under Groove OS 2.0. If it can't start, the FM-1 says GROOVE OS RESCUE and waits for the Install page.

Everything new in 2.0, in the manual

The way back

Trying the beta costs you nothing to undo. Every way back is on a page of this site, and none needs more than the FM-1 and a USB cable.

  1. Back to 1.4

Open the way back on the Install page. With your FM-1 connected it says it puts 1.4 back on, names every step before it writes anything, and installs 1.4 with its own six courses.

    • Your projects come back on the FM-1 afterwards, each in its own slot, and a copy is in your downloads.
    • Your 2.0 samples and kits wait in this browser for when you try 2.0 again.
    • On 1.4 Bluetooth is off until you turn it on in SETTINGS, and a project that uses 2.0's sample tracks opens without them playing.

    Back to 1.4

  2. Back to M-VAVE's original firmware

The Restore page puts M-VAVE's original firmware (V15 or V16) back from M-VAVE's own file, and it needs no account. On a 2.0 FM-1 it saves your samples and your projects first.

    • The samples and kits go to this browser and the projects to your downloads before anything is written. When you install 2.0 again, put your samples back from the Samples page.
    • M-VAVE's firmware keeps no Groove OS projects: they are erased from the FM-1, and the copies are the ones you keep.

    Put M-VAVE's firmware back

  3. If it won't start

Groove OS 2.0 has a small protected starter that runs first on every start. If Groove OS can't start, the FM-1 shows GROOVE OS RESCUE and the reason, and waits for the Install page.

    • Connect it with a USB data cable and open the Install page in Chrome or Edge: it reads the FM-1 and says what to press. Nothing is written until you press the button.
    • Switching it off and on always tries once more.

    Rescue mode, in the manual

Good to know

  • Microphones go through your phone or computer. The FM-1 has no audio input of its own.
  • Samples are mono. Two stretched loops play at once, and a third keeps time by changing pitch.
  • While the song plays, up to three takes wait. They are saved the moment you stop.
  • It is a beta. Made to be played and still being finished. If something misbehaves, tell us, and 1.4 is one install away.
