Groove OS 2.0 is built new for the FM-1, around a sampler. Plug in a phone or a computer, press REC, and the sound is on a key a moment later, ready to chop, tune, loop and play. The SAMPLER also records the FM-1's own groove, so you can bounce a beat, chop it and play it back in a new order. All of it happens on the FM-1.
2.0 is a beta you can try next to 1.4: Moving between 1.4 and 2.0 says how, and how to go back. Everything 1.4 does comes along: eight tracks, the FM and VA engines, effects on every track and on the mix, MIDI and sync, PERFORM, the six Learn courses and undo. This chapter lists what is different if you know 1.4; the chapters it links to have the details. The 1.4 manual stays at /manual, and every release's notes are on the release notes page.
A sampler on the FM-1
| Change | 1.4 | 2.0 | Where |
|---|
| Your own sounds | Made on the website: a kit of eight pads, put on with Add to FM-1 | Recorded on the FM-1 itself, on the new SAMPLER page. No computer is needed to record, chop and play | Your first sample |
| Where sound comes from | | A phone or a computer over USB-C, everything the FM-1 plays (MAIN), the same before the main effects (DRY), or one track (T1 to T8). The FM-1 has no audio input jack of its own | Where the sound comes from |
| A take | | REC starts it and REC ends it. It starts on its first hit even if you press a moment late, and lands on the next empty key without ever overwriting one | Recording |
| In time with the song | | BARS makes a take land on the bar line and loop with the song | Bars |
| Capture what you just heard | | HOME + SAVE on the SAMPLER captures what the input has just heard, without having pressed REC | Capture what you just heard |
| Trim and chop | | START and END trim a sound by ear. CHOPS splits it on its hits across the empty keys, or tap an empty key while a long sound plays | Trim: START and END, Chops |
| Drums or an instrument | | KIT puts a sound on each of 16 white keys. INST plays one sound across the keybed, with LOOP, ATTACK and RELEASE | KIT and INST |
| Loops in time | | WARP fits a loop to the song's tempo (PITCH, BEATS or TONES), and SET TEMPO does the opposite | WARP |
| Room | | QUALITY in the SAMPLER menu: HIGH for the best sound, or LONG for about twice the recording time, with a little grain. Every take keeps its own | Quality: HIGH or LONG |
| Your samples | | The SAMPLER opens on SAMPLES: your kits, instruments and takes, newest first, with what uses each and the room left. Turn to hear each one, K1 shows only kits, instruments or samples, + NEW KIT starts something new, a held HOME + REC deletes with a question, and DELETE UNUSED gives room back. The editor is one SEL in | SAMPLES |
| On a track | | A kit becomes a drum track, an instrument a SAMPLE track. EDIT on either reopens the SAMPLER on it, and EDIT again takes you back | Kits and instruments on tracks |
| Undo | | HOME + REC takes back your last take, capture, chop, warp or other change on the keys, and a take you undo stays in SAMPLES | Undo, retake and delete |
Drum kits and your own sounds
| Change | 1.4 | 2.0 | Where |
|---|
| Pads | A kit has 8 pads | 16 pads on two pages: PADS A is pads 1 to 8 and PADS B pads 9 to 16. The built-in kits fill the first page, so the second is yours | Pads and sounds |
| Playing them | Eight white keys play the pads, and the run repeats up the keybed | The 16 white keys play the 16 pads, one each. The black keys select a pad of the page shown, and HOME + OCT- or OCT+ flips the page | Playing the pads |
| The step grid | The tag under the screen says PADS | On the grid the tag says STEPS, because the white keys are the 16 steps and the black keys pick the pad. The hint says so first | The step grid |
| Your sounds on a pad | Sounds from the website, at the end of a pad's SOUND list | Your samples, by name, in the same list. A sample pad also has START, LENGTH, TONE and REVERB on the knobs under HOME, and EDIT, FINE, REVERSE, LOOP, ATTACK and TONE in its PAD menu | Sample pads |
| Kits in PRESETS | PRESETS lists them under KITS, with USER on K4 | They are KIT USER rows, newest first, and instruments are INST USER. Turn to one to hear it, SEL puts it on the track | Kits from the SAMPLER |
| PERFORM's pad mutes | SEL and white keys 1 to 8 | The same, for the page the kit shows: pads 1 to 8 or pads 9 to 16 | PERFORM |
| A song's samples | Up to 16 of your sounds | Up to 32 samples. A song that uses a recording the FM-1 does not have says 2 SAMPLES MISSING | Projects with samples |
HOME, GLO and the SELECT wheel
| Change | 1.4 | 2.0 | Where |
|---|
| HOME | SHIFT was HOME held down, and the screens said SHIFT | The screens and this manual say HOME. Held, the page stays whole: K1 to K4 show their second row, the key lights show their settings, and every HOME combination says in a toast what it did | HOME |
| GLO | A tap opened SETTINGS and a hold gave a one-line card. In a course the two were the other way round | A tap opens SETTINGS everywhere, and a tap again comes back. A hold shows a short card on the page you are on, and inside a course the card of the step | Help on the panel |
| Changing track | HOME + ALGORITHM worked, but nothing showed it | While HOME is down a strip over the hint line lists every track, with the selected one filled. Each page's hint ends with HOME+ALGO: TRACK | Between tracks |
| The SELECT wheel | TRACKS, MIX, PERFORM, KEYS, PROJECT | TRACKS, MIX, PERFORM, KEYS, SAMPLER, PROJECT: the SAMPLER is one click past KEYS, and opens on SAMPLES | The panel |
| SEL and a turn | On a knob with a recorded lane, the first click cleared the lane | Always moves a number ten at a time, and the legend says X10 | Fast values |
| Clearing a lane | Hold SEL and turn its knob | AUTOMATION in the TRACK menu: pick the lane and press SEL. HOME + REC brings it back | Knob lanes |
Saving, writing and playing
| Change | 1.4 | 2.0 | Where |
|---|
| SAVE while the music plays | Asked THE MUSIC STOPS TO SAVE, and stopped it | Says SAVES WHEN YOU STOP, keeps playing, and saves the moment the music stops. The SAVE light blinks until then, and SAVE again calls it off | Saving |
| A new song's first save | Saved at once into the first empty slot, under a name the FM-1 chose | Opens RENAME with a name already in, so you type, then press SAVE | Saving |
| OCT- and OCT+ on SEQ | Moved the octave, and SEL or HOME with them moved the bar | They move the bar, and HOME + OCT- or OCT+ sets the track's octave | Writing notes |
| OCT- and OCT+ on a KIT's grid | Moved the bar | The same. HOME + OCT is new there: it flips the pads, A or B | The step grid |
| A note on SEQ | A note pressed again wrote on the next step | Pressed again on the step that holds it, the note comes off that step (C4 OFF THE STEP). HOME + REC brings it back | Writing notes |
| The arpeggiator | ARP on its page switched it off and left | ARP opens its page and closes it again, and the arpeggio plays on. Switch it off with the ARP row at the top of its menu | Switching it on |
| A pattern and an arpeggio on one track | The second button was refused (SEQ ON THIS TRACK or ARP ON THIS TRACK) | The button you press wins: T1 ARP OFF · SEQ ON or T1 SEQ OFF · ARP ON | Switching it on |
| Printing the arpeggio | Needed a held chord | HOME + SAVE on ARP prints the last chord it played too, then switches the arp off so you hear the copy | Recording the arpeggio |
| A pattern, switched off | SEQ on the grid | SEQ on the grid still does it. PLAYS is new, the first row of the PATTERN menu, to switch a pattern off without leaving | Switching a pattern on |
| Tapping the tempo on PERFORM | Every press of SEL counted, also when you held it for pad mutes | Only a tap counts: SEL pressed and let go with nothing used in between | Tempo |
Settings, install and rescue
| Change | 1.4 | 2.0 | Where |
|---|
| Bluetooth | A row that started pairing | A row that is on or off, with no pairing. A device lists the FM-1 as FM-1 Groove. Bluetooth MIDI itself does what it did in 1.4 | BLUETOOTH |
| USB audio | | A row, USB AUDIO, that says what the FM-1 shows a computer or phone, and so whether the SAMPLER's USB input has anything to hear | USB AUDIO |
| Your samples | | SAMPLES in SETTINGS opens SAMPLES | SAMPLES |
| Install | One install page, 1.4 | The beta is opt-in, from /install?to=2.0. Your samples and kits come with you. Your projects come back on the FM-1, with a copy in your downloads | Moving between 1.4 and 2.0 |
| Learn | Six courses written for 1.4's controls | Six courses with their own cards, which say HOME and the new GLO. The install puts them on the FM-1 | The courses |
| Rescue | M-VAVE's own screens sat underneath, and OCT- with OCT+ at power-on started them | There are no M-VAVE screens under Groove OS 2.0. If it cannot start, the FM-1 shows GROOVE OS RESCUE and waits for the Install page. OCT- with OCT+ at power-on is now the chip's USB download mode, a dark screen, for a last resort | Rescue mode |
Everything else plays and saves as in 1.4. A song you made on 1.4 opens on 2.0 as it was.
Troubleshooting
| What happens | Why, and what to do |
|---|
| The wheel stops on the SAMPLER where it used to stop on PROJECT | The order is TRACKS, MIX, PERFORM, KEYS, SAMPLER, PROJECT: PROJECT is one click further. |
| A card covers the screen | You held GLO for a second: it is the page's help card. Press any control, or GLO again, to put it away. A tap of GLO is SETTINGS. |
| Holding SEL and turning did not clear a lane | It moves the value ten at a time now. Clear the lane in the TRACK menu, under AUTOMATION. |
| OCT- and OCT+ did not change the octave on SEQ | There they move the bar. Hold HOME for the track's octave. |
The drum grid's tag says STEPS, not PADS | On the grid the white keys are steps. The tag says PADS A or PADS B where they play the pads. |
| ARP did not switch the arpeggio off | It opens and closes the screen, and the arpeggio plays on. Use the ARP row at the top of the ARP menu. |
| SAVE did not save | While the music plays it waits for the stop: SAVES WHEN YOU STOP. |
| A project did not come back after the install | The page says which one. It is in your downloads as a .groove file: put it back with upload on the Projects page. |
