Chapter 3· Groove OS 2.0 beta
The controls
Play along as you read: the FM-1 beside the text is a working one, running the real Groove OS 2.0, and it follows the part of the page you are reading. Tap a control's name in the text to find it on the panel, and press Start on a Try it card to be shown. Sound stays off until you turn it on.
Every screen of Groove OS works the same way, so you only learn the controls once. ALGORITHM is the cursor, to change what the cursor is on, opens it, goes back, and while you hold every control does its other job. This chapter names every control, explains the three kinds of screen (views, menus and editors), and covers HOME, undo, help and the keys.
The panel
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| (left encoder) | Turns between the six views: TRACKS, MIX, PERFORM, KEYS, SAMPLER, PROJECT. With : tempo, 1 BPM per detent. The SAMPLER opens on SAMPLES, your list of everything you have made. |
| (encoder) | Turn it to open the sound browser and move through the sounds. With : step the TYPE filter. On the SAMPLER's editor it goes up to SAMPLES. |
| (right encoder) | The cursor: it walks the lanes, strips, steps, rows and groups of the screen. With : the previous or next track, from any screen. |
| - | Four colour knobs (blue, green, yellow, orange). They change what the cursor is on; the legend under the screen names each one. With : a second row of four, on the screens that have one. |
| (push) | Opens the cursor's menu, or does the row it is on. Hold it and turn a knob to move a number ten at a time. |
| A tap goes back one level, and from any view but TRACKS and PERFORM on to TRACKS. Held, every other control does its other action (see HOME). | |
| Starts the music on the press and stops it on the release. Hold it and turn for the tempo, from any screen (the music keeps playing). With : redo. | |
| Records onto the selected track (on the SAMPLER it records sound: see SAMPLER). With : tap for undo, hold to delete. | |
| The selected track's sequencer. With : DICE. | |
| The arpeggiator. With : its page. | |
| Saves the project. While the music plays it saves when you stop. With : capture the last loop you played (or PRINT, on SEQ and ARP). | |
| , , , | The selected track's effects (TRACK FX; : MAIN FX, what every track shares), the amp envelope, the LFO and the sound editor. Press again to go back. On a sample track opens the SAMPLER, and again goes back. |
A tap opens SETTINGS, where LEARN starts a course on the FM-1. Held for a second and let go, it shows a card on what the page does (inside a course, the step's card: see Learn on your FM-1). | |
| , | The selected track's octave, -3 to +3. On SEQ and on a KIT's step grid they move the bar instead; with they set the octave on SEQ and flip the KIT's pads A and B. |
| The 27 keys (F to G) | Play the selected track. What they do depends on the screen; the keybed tag says what (see The keys). |
Each knob on screen is drawn as a ring with its value, and the ring turns: bipolar values fill from the middle. If a knob has no job on the row the cursor is on, its ring is dark and the legend shows a dash.
Views, menus and editors
There are only three kinds of screen.
| Kind | What it is | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| VIEW | A picture of your music that you work on directly. Six of them are on the SELECT wheel; the sequencer, KIT, SOUND, the arpeggiator and the effects are views you open from a track. | TRACKS, MIX, PERFORM, KEYS, SAMPLER, PROJECT, SEQUENCER, KIT, SOUND |
| MENU | A list of rows. | The TRACK menu, the TIME menu, the PATTERN menu, SETTINGS |
| EDITOR | A picture plus the four knobs, for editing one thing. | TRACK FX, MAIN FX, the CHORDS editor, RENAME, the sound editor's groups |
In a menu, a row can be one of four things:
| Row | What SEL does |
|---|---|
A value (LENGTH 4 BARS) | Nothing: it is edited with . |
Ends in ▸ | Opens a deeper menu or editor. |
Ends in ↵ | Does the action. |
| Dimmed | It cannot act right now. (or ) says why in a toast. |
goes back one level. The cursor position of each menu is remembered. The STEP menu on SEQ reopens on the row you used last. The PAD menu on KIT finds that row by its name, so the same row comes back even though the step's rows come and go with the step; with a step under the cursor it opens on STEP VELO, the step's first row, unless the row you used last is further down.

Press SEL on the T2 lane: its TRACK menu is a list of rows. Turn ALGORITHM to pick one, then tap HOME to go back.
SELALGORITHMHOMEThe screen
The top line is the header: where you are (the view, and the project or track after it), the transport (a triangle while playing, a red dot while recording), the position as bar.beat, the tempo, four squares that flash the beat, the battery on the views (a cell with up to three bars; the bars climb while it charges, an empty cell blinks, and there is no cell until the first reading: see SETTINGS for the reading), and a small square after the title when the project has changes you have not saved. While you turn , six small marks replace the words after the title and show where you are on the wheel. The line under the picture is the hint: the next useful move. At the bottom, to show their value and name (the legend), and the tag at the right of the hint line says what the keys do. Short messages (toasts) appear at the top for a second or two and name what just happened, such as UNDO T3 TAKE. While a web page is linked over USB (remote control), a small link mark sits in the header (see MIDI and sync).
One rule for shortcuts
Every page follows the same rule: HOME + a control does its other action, and held while you turn a knob moves a number ten at a time (a press of opens or confirms). The hint line teaches the rest.
The hint line takes turns. It lists CONTROL: VERB pairs. When they do not all fit on one line, it shows them a line at a time, a new line every 3 seconds, in the order of the table below: a page's main moves first, then its hidden gestures. On a view or editor that is not TRACKS, PERFORM or PROJECT, the last turn is HOME+ALGO: TRACK, the way to change track from there. SETTINGS > HINTS OFF hides the hint line, not the footers of the menus and of PROJECT, which take turns the same way.

The undo toast. After anything undo can take back (a take, DICE, a pattern edit, a clear, a print, a longer loop, a deleted track), a toast says what would undo: HOME+REC: UNDO T3 DICE. It waits until the toasts before it are done and nothing is recording, and shows once for each new undo step. See Recording and undo.
Questions: everything destructive asks
Anything that can lose work stops and asks first. A question shows the action and what it costs, with two choices: picks, confirms, cancels. The safe choice, CANCEL, is highlighted first.
There is one gesture for every delete: hold HOME and hold REC with the cursor on the thing you want gone. A ring fills and names it (CLEAR T2, DELETE NIGHT BUS); let go before it fills and nothing happens. It then asks. If the cursor is on something with nothing to delete, it says so (NOTHING TO DELETE HERE; on a track, NOTHING TO CLEAR ON T2).
| With the cursor on | Hold HOME + REC clears |
|---|---|
| A track (TRACKS or MIX) | That track's recorded notes and knob moves and, on a sound track, its pattern, a line DICE wrote included (asks; one undo brings it all back) |
| The TIME row | Every track's recorded notes and knob moves (asks); the patterns stay |
| A step in the sequencer | That step (CLEAR STEP 5) |
| The sequencer's pattern row | The whole pattern |
| A step or pad on KIT | That pad's steps; on the pattern row, every step |
| A key on the SAMPLER | The sound on the key (asks; see SAMPLER) |
| A row of SAMPLES | That take, kit or instrument (asks, and says what uses it; see SAMPLES) |
| A project slot | The project (asks) |
| A menu row marked as destructive (CLEAR, DELETE, ERASE ALL) | That row's action |
Most things are also undoable: a tap of takes back the last thing you did on any track, and brings it back. On the SAMPLER a tap of takes back the last take, keep or chop. See Recording and undo.
Try it·On the FM-1
Hold HOME and hold REC on the T2 lane until the ring fills, then let go: the FM-1 asks before it clears anything.
HOMERECHOME
does two jobs. A quick tap is the back step. Hold it and every other control does its other action: rolls DICE, keeps the last loop, undoes, sets the tempo. You can use it without thinking about it, because the FM-1 shows what is on offer while you hold it, and the page stays whole:
- At once: a button, knob or key pressed with HOME down does its HOME job straight away, with no waiting. The keys are HOME keys from the moment HOME goes down; only a key you were already holding when you pressed HOME stays a note.
- After the HOLD TIME (300 ms): the header shows a tag, the four knobs on the legend swap to their second row (their rings carry an arrow), and the key lights show the current values of the settings the keys set. PERFORM keeps its stage and shows a band over the tick line instead of lighting the keys.
- Every HOME + control says what it did: a toast names it (
LENGTH 2 BARS,LAUNCH BAR,QUANT 1/16,CLICK ON,TAP 120).
A tap of shorter than the HOLD TIME, with nothing used, is the back step. A key pressed while HOME is down counts as used, so that tap does not go back. You can change the time in SETTINGS > CONTROLS (200 to 400 ms).
Careful: while HOME is down every key is a HOME key, so a note played then sets the loop's length, the launch or the click instead of sounding. Tap HOME between notes, not under them.
What HOME does
| HOME + | What happens |
|---|---|
| (tap) | Undo the last thing you did, on any track. |
| (hold 1.5 s) | The cursor row's destructive action, with a question. |
| Redo. | |
| On SEQ, and on ARP with the arp on: PRINT the pattern or arpeggio onto the track (on ARP it prints the chord the arp plays, or the last one it played, then switches the arp off so you hear the copy). On the SAMPLER: keep what you just heard. Anywhere else: keep the last loop you played onto the selected track (it needs the music playing). | |
DICE: a new line (a sound track) or a new beat (a KIT) on the selected track, in one undoable roll. The PATTERN and KIT menus have it as a DICE row too. | |
| Opens the ARP page; nothing is switched on or off. | |
Switches the chord pads on (PADS) or off, from any screen; PLAY is set with K4 CHORDS on KEYS. Not on a KIT track. On PERFORM it glides the throws back. | |
Tempo, 1 BPM per detent (blocked while the MIDI clock is EXT). | |
| The previous or next track, wherever you are (see below). | |
| (turn) | Opens the browser if it is closed and steps the TYPE filter. |
| - | The second row of knobs, where a screen has one (MIX strips, the sound editor, the SAMPLER's keys). |
| , | On SEQ, the track's octave. On KIT, the pads shown: A (pads 1 to 8) or B (pads 9 to 16). |
Between tracks: HOME + ALGORITHM
changes the selected track from any screen, and the page stays where it is. While HOME stays down, a strip over the hint line shows every track (its chip and its name) with the one you are on filled, so you see where the next detent lands. It goes when you let go of HOME, and letting go after turning does not go back. On a page with a hint line, the last turn of the hint is HOME+ALGO: TRACK (The hint line takes turns).
Try it·On the FM-1
Hold HOME and turn ALGORITHM one click: the selected track changes and the page stays where it is.
HOMEALGORITHMThe HOME keys
Hold HOME and the keys set how a loop records, from the first key. After the HOLD TIME their lights show the current value. They are in three groups, from the left:
| Keys | Setting | Values |
|---|---|---|
| F3, G3, A3, B3 | LENGTH of the selected track's loop (on SEQ: of the pattern, in bars of 16 steps; the 8 key says TOO LONG there) | 1, 2, 4, 8 bars |
| C4, D4, E4 | LAUNCH: when record, mutes, solos and pattern changes land | OFF, BEAT, BAR |
| F4, G4 | QUANT: snap recorded notes to the grid | OFF, 1/16 |
| A4 | CLICK: the metronome | on or off |
| B4 | COUNT-IN: the bar of clicks before recording from a stop | on or off |
| F#5 | TAP: tap to set the tempo (the second tap already sets it; the average of the last three gaps follows) |
On the SAMPLER, F3 to B3 set the bars of the next take instead (see Bars); on a sample track they say how many bars the track's sample is (2 BARS LONG). MIX and PERFORM do the mute and solo for any track.
Buttons that open tools
SEQ, ARP, FX, ENV, LFO, EDIT and GLO open their screens from anywhere, and most go back where you were when you press them again. (The sound browser is opened by turning .)
| Button | Opens | Press again |
|---|---|---|
| The selected track's TRACK FX (: MAIN FX; on TRACKS' TIME row and MIX's MAIN strip, MAIN FX) | Back | |
| The sound editor on the amp envelope | Back | |
| The sound editor on the LFO | Back | |
| The sound editor (on a sample track: the SAMPLER, on what the track plays) | Back | |
| SETTINGS | Back | |
| Switches the selected track's pattern on and shows it; a pattern that already plays is only shown | On the sequencer: switches the pattern off and returns to TRACKS | |
| Opens the ARP page and switches the arpeggiator on, on the selected track | Back where you were; the arpeggiator plays on |
A track plays its sequencer pattern or the arpeggiator, not both, and there is one arpeggiator in the project. The button you press wins: on a track whose arp plays switches the arp off and the pattern on (T1 ARP OFF · SEQ ON), and on a track whose pattern plays does the reverse (T1 SEQ OFF · ARP ON). or on the SEQ page with the arp on switches over the same way. To stop a generator without leaving its page, turn the PATTERN menu's PLAYS row (first row) or the ARP menu's ARP row (first row) off.
On a KIT track, from anywhere else opens the drum step grid, and on the grid itself switches the kit's steps off (KIT STEPS OFF) and returns to TRACKS; the hits stay and play on (see KIT). only changes the view: it never switches a pattern or the arpeggiator off, and it never stops the music.
Help on the panel
Hold any of FX, ENV, LFO, EDIT, ARP, SEQ, SAVE or PLAY for a second on a view and a card says in a line what it does and what HOME adds (PLAY's says HOLD + K1: TEMPO. HOME: REDO). Let go and nothing happens: the card is only a look. A held that long does not save (NOT SAVED: TAP SAVE).
works the other way round: hold it for a second and let go, and the page's own card shows, and stays until you put it away. It is a few lines on what the page does and the moves worth knowing, ending ANY CONTROL: BACK. or puts it away; a knob or any other button puts it away and does its job. Inside a course the card is the step to do (see Learn on your FM-1).
The hint line gives the next useful move on every view but PERFORM. It is on by default; SETTINGS > HINTS switches it off. The keybed tag at its right stays.
The keys
The 27 keys always play something. A tag at the right of the hint line says what, and the key lights agree.
| Tag | What the keys do | Where |
|---|---|---|
NOTES | Play the selected track's sound, through IN KEY and the chords | TRACKS, MIX, SEQ, SOUND, and most screens |
PADS A, PADS B | Play the 8 pads of the page a kit shows (A: pads 1 to 8, B: pads 9 to 16; flips) | A KIT track, off its step grid |
STEPS | The white keys are the grid's 16 steps, the black keys pick the pad; the key lights show where the selected pad has hits | A KIT track's step grid and its menus |
PADS | Play the chord pads | KEYS with CHORDS on PADS |
CHORDS | Every in-key key plays its chord | KEYS with CHORDS on PLAY |
MUTES | Mute, solo and punch in; scenes on the black keys | PERFORM |
LETTERS | Each key types its letter | RENAME |
KIT, INST | The 16 white keys play the kit's sounds, or every key plays the one sound at its own pitch | SAMPLER (see SAMPLER) |
PAD KEYS | The sound on the key you are on, across the keybed | SAMPLER, after ON THE KEYS |
The octave belongs to the track: and change the selected track's octave, and the keys and chords follow it. (A KIT track has no octave: it says DRUMS HAVE NO OCTAVE.) Every key plays at the same velocity, so a part sits at one steady level however you press: the keys are not velocity sensitive. For a louder or softer part, open KEYS, press and set FIXED VELO (the KEYS menu).
Fast values
Knobs accelerate: a quick turn moves further. Hold and turn to move a number ten at a time; the legend says X10 under each knob it works on. This works on every screen, MIX's strips and MAIN included, and on a knob that has a recorded lane too: it never clears the lane. A lane clears in the TRACK menu, under AUTOMATION (a lane, ), and brings it back (see TRACKS).
Every value that runs from 0 to 100 moves one unit a click, so you can land on any number: the macros (and their step locks), a track's LEVEL and its two sends on MIX, MAIN's four, a pad's LEVEL, REVERB and DELAY, CLICK VOL, a pattern's GATE, DICE SETUP's DENSITY and the arpeggiator's SWING. A pad's CHANCE still moves 5 % a click.
Try it·On the FM-1
Hold SEL and turn K1 one click: TONE moves ten at a time.
