Groove OS 2.0.

Your own sounds, in your next beat.

The headline

  1. 01 · New

    Sample anything, on the FM-1

Turn a drum break, a voice memo or a few notes into a new part. Record from your phone over Bluetooth, from a computer over USB-C or from the FM-1 itself.

A short buffer catches the start if you record a little late. Record a set number of bars to make a loop that fits your song.

  2. 02 · New

Chop it, shape it, play it

Split a phrase across the pads and play the pieces in a new order. Tune, reverse or loop each one, or spread a single sample across the keys as an instrument.

Stretch a loop to your song's tempo, or sample a beat you made and turn it into something new.

    How chopping works
  3. 03 · New

    Your phone, no cable

Sample audio from your phone over Bluetooth, or play along with a track you love. The FM-1 remembers paired devices for next time.

Bluetooth MIDI works beside it, and an update keeps your pairings.

New

  • HOME + SAVE on the SAMPLER keeps what the input has just heard, without pressing REC.
  • HIGH, the default, keeps the best sound. LONG gives about twice the recording time: a take runs up to 10.3 seconds at HIGH quality and 20.3 at LONG. Every take keeps its own.
  • 16 pads on two pages: the white keys play pads 1 to 16, and HOME + OCT flips the page.
  • INST plays one sound across the keys, with LOOP, ATTACK and RELEASE.
  • FIT fits a loop to the tempo as TONES, BEATS or SPEED, and SET TEMPO fits the tempo to the loop.
  • SAMPLES lists every kit, instrument and take, with the room left. DELETE UNUSED gives room back.
  • A kit becomes a drum track and an instrument a sample track. EDIT opens it again in the SAMPLER.
  • HOME + REC on the SAMPLER takes back your last take or change, and the take stays in SAMPLES.
  • A project holds up to 32 samples, and says how many are missing on an FM-1 that lacks them.
  • YOUR SOUND, the third course on the FM-1: sample a sound, chop it, play it in your groove and shape it, each step checked as you go.
  • LFOs that play in time: turn the speed past its top and a wobble or tremolo locks to your song's tempo.
  • Every track's effects on your MIDI controller: faders for each track's reverb, delay, drive, crush, filter and slicer.
  • Move a slider in an FM sound editor and the FM sound follows at once, while the music plays.
  • Pan every track left or right on MIX: hats, keys and pads each in their own place, for a wider, clearer mix.
  • A ping-pong delay that bounces its echoes from side to side, in time with your song.
  • Widen the reverb and the chorus for bigger rooms and wide, shimmering pads.
  • Analog-style sounds from the start: a new project and a new kit track play analog-style drums (EIGHT-OH, PUNCH, DUSTY, STEEL and NINE-OH, each also as FM drums), and 24 GROOVE OS sounds wait at the top of PRESETS before you load a single sound pack.
  • Ten synth voices for the analog-style sounds, up from eight, so a pad, a bass and a chord play together without cutting each other off.
  • More headroom in the reverb and the delay: a busy mix with the effects turned up stays clean.

Improved

  • Synths and reverb sound bigger and wider on headphones and the line out.
  • The playhead glides smoothly across your tracks, even while your phone plays through the FM-1 over Bluetooth.
  • More room to record: a new FM-1 has no samples on it, so all of its room is yours.
  • Updates are safer: the installer keeps a copy of your samples and projects first and checks them when it is done.
  • Hold HOME and each knob shows its second job, and a toast says what every combination did.
  • A tap of GLO opens SETTINGS everywhere. Hold it for a short card about the page you are on.
  • While HOME is down, a strip lists every track, so HOME + ALGORITHM never leaves you guessing.
  • SAVE while the music plays waits for the stop and saves then, so the music never stops for it.
  • ARP opens and closes its page and the arpeggio plays on. A new project's first save lets you name it.
  • Bluetooth is one row in SETTINGS: OFF, ON or PAIRING. A phone lists the FM-1 as FM-1 Groove.
  • Learn's five courses come in 2.0's own words, with HOME and the new GLO, and sampling comes third.
  • If Groove OS can't start, the FM-1 shows GROOVE OS RESCUE and waits for the Install page.
  • A recording the FM-1 can't read when it starts is kept, never erased.

Fixed

  • After M-VAVE's V16, the install puts the FM-1's own copy of its factory sounds back, so RESET BANK works again.
  • Scenes bring back the pattern each track was playing, A to P, along with the mutes: capture a verse and a chorus, then switch between them with one key.
  • A loop you FIT with a silent end keeps your tempo, and a captured loop plays in time from the bar line.
  • A recording is kept when the FM-1 runs out of room while the website is sending it sounds.
  • REC works right away after the website has put sounds on your FM-1.
  • FIT with little room left makes the fitted copy at LONG quality and says so (FITTED · LONG QUALITY TO FIT) instead of stopping; with no room at all it says NO ROOM · DELETE A SAMPLE OR TRIM IT. A fitted copy reads FITTED 2 BARS.
  • + ADD TRACK > SAMPLE always adds the track and, with nothing sampled yet, opens the SAMPLER ready to record. The SAMPLER's menu opens on TO A TRACK every time, and HOME + REC takes SET TEMPO back.
  • Deleting a kit says how many samples stay (2 SAMPLES STAY), and the warning for samples an FM-1 lacks counts only the tracks your song still has.
  • PRESETS on a melodic track opens on its own sound, and TYPE lists the GROOVE OS sounds first.

Your projects

Your samples and kits come with you, your saved projects come back on the FM-1 after every install, each in its own slot, with a copy in your downloads, and your Bluetooth pairings are kept. Banks and settings are not promised to carry over.
