Learn · Chapter 3 of 9

Bass.

A two-bar acid bassline in A minor on ACID BASS, typed into the sequencer, looping against the one-bar drums.

About 12 minutes · 13 steps

Start from here

The FM-1 below starts where chapter 2 ended, so you can begin here.

  1. Step 1, now: On TRACKS, turn ALGORITHM to track 2, FAT.

Track 2 is a VA track: Groove OS's virtual-analog synth, made for basses.

    ALGORITHMManual: Two engines
  2. Step 2: Turn PRESETS two clicks to the left, to ACID BASS.

The first click opens the browser. Each click plays the sound it lands on: ACID BASS is the acid squelch.

    PRESETS

If it doesn't work: The browser closes after 8 seconds untouched. Turn PRESETS again to reopen it.

    Manual: The preset browser
  3. Step 3: Press SEL to take it.

SEL gives the sound to the track. HOME would have left FAT BASS where it was.

    SELManual: The preset browser
  4. Step 4: Press SEQ.

SEQ switches the track's pattern on and opens its grid: steps across, the notes of A minor down.

    SEQManual: Switching a pattern on
  5. Step 5: Press OCT- once.

The keys play an octave lower, where a bass lives: the grid's rows now read A2. The octave is the track's own.

    OCT-Manual: The keys
  6. Step 6: Type steps 1 to 8: each key writes a step.

Each key writes its note and moves on. A rest: hold SEQ and press any key.

Tip: A wrong note? Turn ALGORITHM back to it and press the right key.

    Manual: Writing notes
  7. Step 7: Type steps 9 to 16.

The line jumps up to E and G and lands back on A. That movement is the acid.

    rest3A37E4rest3A39G43A3restManual: Writing notes
  8. Step 8: Hold HOME and press key 2: two bars.

SHIFT + key 2 (G3) makes the pattern 2 bars. Bar 1 is copied into bar 2, ready to answer.

    SHIFT2G3

Tip: The header reads BAR 1 OF 2 once it worked. A copy you do not want? SHIFT + REC takes it back.

    Manual: The pattern row
  9. Step 9: Hold SEL, press OCT+, then key 10: step 26.

Held, SEL + OCT picks the bar and SEL + a key the step in it. Bar 2 changes from here.

    SELOCT+SEL10A4Manual: Writing notes
  10. Step 10: Type steps 26 to 31 over the copy.

Bar 2 answers: up through D and E to G, then down to C, back toward A.

  11. Step 11: Press PLAY.

Drums and bass together. The bass loops every 2 bars, the drums every bar.

    PLAYManual: Length and loops
  12. Step 12: Tap HOME and watch TRACKS.

Each track loops over its own length. Here the drums go round twice for every pass of the bass.

    HOMEManual: Length and loops
  13. Step 13: Press PLAY to stop.

Two tracks down. Next come the chords.

Chapter 3 · the end

What you learned.

  • PRESETS opens the sound browser; each click plays the next sound; SEL takes it, HOME leaves it.
  • SEQ switches a track's pattern on. The keys write a step each; SEQ + a key writes a rest.
  • OCT- and OCT+ set the track's own octave.
  • SHIFT + key 2 on SEQ makes the pattern 2 bars, bar 1 copied into bar 2. Every track loops over its own length.

Checkpoint
