About 8 minutes · 13 steps

Start from here

The FM-1 below starts where chapter 1 ended, so you can begin here.

  1. Step 1, now: On TRACKS, turn ALGORITHM to the DRUMS lane.

Track 1 is a kit: eight drum sounds on one track, played as pads.

    ALGORITHMManual: KIT
  2. Step 2: Press SEQ.

On a kit, SEQ opens the step grid, T1 KIT: the pads down the side, the 16 steps of a bar across.

    SEQManual: The step grid
  3. Step 3: Hold HOME and press key 1.

Held, HOME is SHIFT, and key 1 (F3) sets the loop to 1 bar. A one-bar beat repeats under everything.

    SHIFT1F3

Tip: HOME and the key can go down together. Only a key pressed before HOME plays a pad.

    Manual: The SHIFT keys
  4. Step 4: Tap keys 1, 5, 9 and 13 for the kick.

Each white key is one step: key 1 is step 1, key 5 is step 5. No need to move the cursor. Four on the floor.

Tip: Tap a key again to take its hit off. The cursor is only for editing a hit you placed: SEL opens it.

    Manual: The step grid
  5. Step 5: Press black key 3 to pick CLAP.

The black keys pick the pad the white keys write. The grid marks the row you are on.

  6. Step 6: Press keys 5 and 13 for the clap.

Steps 5 and 13 are beats 2 and 4, the backbeat. Your head nods there.

    5C413D5Manual: The step grid
  7. Step 7: Press black key 5 to pick O.HAT.

The open hat. In house it sits between the kicks.

    5D♯4Manual: Pads and sounds
  8. Step 8: Press keys 3, 7, 11 and 15 for the hat.

Steps 3, 7, 11 and 15: the offbeats. Kick, hat, kick, hat is the push and pull.

    3A37E411B415F5Manual: The step grid
  9. Step 9: Press PLAY.

The orange column runs across the grid. That is your beat.

    PLAYManual: The step grid
  10. Step 10: Hold HOME and press SEQ: DICE.

DICE writes a new beat on the same drums. A quick way to hear another idea.

    SHIFTSEQManual: DICE and GENERATE
  11. Step 11: Hold HOME and tap REC: undo.

Undo takes the roll back, and your own beat returns. Everything you do can be undone.

    SHIFTREC

Tip: Liked the roll? SHIFT + PLAY is redo. For this guide, go back to your beat.

    Manual: Undo across tracks
  12. Step 12: Tap HOME to see TRACKS.

The DRUMS lane shows your bar, and its repeats in a dimmer colour.

    HOMEManual: TRACKS
  13. Step 13: Press PLAY to stop.

The beat is kept. The bass comes next.
